Nutritious lunch box ideas. Nutrition is important to all of us especially children whose nutritional needs may be greater than those of adults because their still developing. Providing nutritious lunches is easy and cost effective.
Sandwiches should consist of low fat meats, tuna or cheese. A great way to add calcium to the diets of those who dislike milk try low fat cottage cheese with a fruit like peaches. Snacks could always include a piece of fruit that perhaps the child would prefer. Remember if a child doesn’t eat what’s in his lunch it’s not helping them very much nutritionally. So select foods that are nutritional and that they like. The best way to find out what they can and will eat in their packed lunch is to get them to try it out first at home before packing it in their lunch.
Great ideas for selecting items for a nutritious lunch begin with you. Include sugar free cookies, dried fruits flavored milk in place of white milk which most children disdain. Low fat and sugar free snacks are always a good addition and helps with the ‘same old, same old’ syndrome that children can develop after being repeatedly forced to consume the same menu items in their packed lunches day after day.
When packing lunches I insist that whomever I assist with packing their lunch is right there with me and making choices themselves. Of course I help to direct these choices to a healthier menu but they ultimately make the final decision themselves.
Nutritious items that I offer to be placed in lunches are their choice of fruit. I insist that they have at least one fruit and if they want a banana instead of an apple packed everyday I’m OK with that so long as they choose one fruit. I also allow for the choice of one ‘junk food’ item besides the sandwich and the fruit. This can be popcorn, pretzels or yogurt. Other items that can be included are cottage cheese, salad, low fat cheeses and vegetable chips. Sliced green peppers are also a very nutritious item to be added to their packed lunches.
Whether you are serving at home or packing a lunch the important thing to remember is to offer choices. Not everyone can stomach cottage cheese and and peaches. Do not offer items like hot dogs, fried chicken or hamburgers everyday. Once in awhile for the sake of variety is OK. Chicken breasts that are skinned and broiled, with a choice of vegetables and boiled potatoes is one menu example. Offer a variety and be sure to include choices from all of the basic food groups.
